Jonathan Hoefler is one of the architects of the modern type industry. A typeface designer and typographer, he is the founder of Hoefler&Co, the type foundry whose early commitment to comprehensive original works and interpretations, and innovative approach to presentation and commentary, have had lasting effects on the way typefaces are designed and produced today. His typefaces have given voice to the world’s foremost institutions, publications, causes, and brands, and his clients include Apple, The New York Times, Tiffany & Co., The Guggenheim Museum, and Obama For America. He has designed some of the most popular and influential typefaces of our time, including Gotham, Knockout, Mercury, Sentinel, and Archer.
A two-time honoree of the National Design Awards, Hoefler is the only person to ever have received both the Prix Charles Peignot, the prize for typographic excellence awarded by the Association Typographique Internationale, and the AIGA Medal, the design profession’s highest honor. He is the subject of an Emmy-nominated episode of the Netflix documentary series ‘Abstract: The Art of Design,’ and his work is in the permanent collections of both the Smithsonian Institution and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 2020, he designed the typographic system that shaped both the Biden-Harris campaign, and the visual communications of the Biden White House.
